The best PDF to Excel converters for accountants and bookkeepers
There is no single best converter: Excel’s own Power Query is enough for clean digital PDFs, Adobe Acrobat suits people who already pay for it, DocuClipper suits firms that want statements pushed into QuickBooks or Xero, ProperConvert and MoneyThumb suit desktop QuickBooks users, and PDFCells suits people who want free, checked conversion without uploading files. This page is written by PDFCells, so weigh it accordingly.

Where PDFCells is weaker
- No direct QuickBooks or Xero connection, no API and no team accounts.
- Fewer formats: no IIF, QFX or QIF, and QuickBooks Desktop may refuse its .qbo.
- A statement whose transaction dates omit the year and that prints no statement period needs you to pick its year before OFX or QBO export, and a batch of them can’t be exported in those formats.
- No security certification such as SOC 2; the privacy model is that files stay in your browser.
- It converts tables; it doesn’t extract named invoice fields such as invoice number or vendor.
Where PDFCells is stronger
- Free for text PDFs and OCR with no account, no page quota and no upload.
- Every statement is checked (running balance or summary) before OFX, QBO or Xero files are offered.
- Each table is reviewed next to its page, with problems flagged, before you download.
- Bank reconciliation against your ledger in the same tool, also in the browser.
Other tools
BankStatementConverter.com offers a free page allowance every 24 hours and paid subscriptions, says it supports thousands of banks, and has an API. StatementTidy and HarborConvert say they convert in the browser without uploading; StatementTidy is bank-statement-specific and says scanned PDFs aren’t supported yet. Nanonets and Docsumo are general document-AI platforms with workflow automation and integrations, rather than statement converters.
How to choose
- Clean digital PDFs, already in Excel: try Power Query first.
- Recent bank activity: download CSV or QBO from your bank; most offer 90 days to 2 years.
- Old statements, scans, closed accounts: a converter with OCR and balance checks.
- Dozens of clients a month into QuickBooks Online or Xero: an integrated service.
- Files that must not leave your computer: a desktop tool or an in-browser converter.
